Typically, each charging station houses multiple individual Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) ports, points, or stalls.

An EVSE port can accommodate multiple connectors, but it can only charge one car at a time, similar to a gas pump. To simplify matters, we’ll refer to an EVSE port as a “charging port,” even though this term isn’t entirely precise, it’s widely accepted in the industry.

As per data from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center, the United States currently has around 50,000 public EV charging stations. These stations collectively offer almost 130,000 individual (EVSE) charging ports.

Within this total, there are approximately 44,000 Level 2 stations, boasting over 100,000 charging ports. Conversely, there are roughly 6,600 DC Fast Charging stations equipped with around 28,000 charging ports. This breakdown illustrates that while the U.S. has witnessed a notable increase in the count of public EV charging ports, the majority fall under the category of Level 2 ports, which do not support rapid charging capabilities.

While ChargePoint holds a substantial advantage in terms of the total count of charging stations and ports across the U.S., it falls considerably short in comparison to Tesla’s impressive number of fast-charging locations. Moreover, Tesla isn’t the sole contender with a higher count of DC Fast Charging ports when compared to ChargePoint.

As reported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Tesla’s influence shines through with more than 1,600 Supercharger stations spread across the United States, housing over 17,000 fast-charging ports. Following suit, Electrify America steps up with approximately 800 stations, equipped with around 3,600 fast-charging ports. Meanwhile, EVgo claims a stake with approximately 2,200 fast-charging ports, and ChargePoint follows closely behind with about 1,800 of its own.

By now, it’s evident that the United States is trailing behind in terms of rapid-charging infrastructure, necessitating government intervention to expedite network growth. The Tesla Supercharger network stands out, commanding around 60% of the total 26,000 DC Fast Charging ports in the country. Unfortunately, as of now, only Tesla owners can utilize this network.

Moving on, the next triumvirate of leaders in U.S. DC Fast Charging – namely Electrify America, EVgo, and ChargePoint – collectively account for nearly 7,600 fast-charging ports, constituting approximately 29% of the overall fast-charging locations in the nation.

When you add Tesla’s roughly 17,000 Supercharger ports to the aforementioned 7,500, a mere quartet of companies emerges as responsible for the lion’s share of DC Fast Chargers available in the country.

To provide perspective, the U.S. currently hosts fewer than 10,000 accessible EV fast-charging ports that cater to every electric vehicle, irrespective of its make or model. This stands in stark contrast to the over 150,000 gas stations equipped with numerous gas pumps each. Although the prevalence of EVs in the U.S. remains modest, with Tesla vehicles making up a substantial portion, this dynamic is rapidly evolving. Soaring gasoline prices, coupled with an array of appealing EV models entering the market, have collectively fueled a noteworthy surge in adoption over a relatively brief period.

As per the US Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center, the United States boasts approximately 51,000 public charging stations.

Unquestionably taking the lead is California, with a significant margin. The Golden State proudly houses around 14,040 public charging stations and a staggering 37,987 charging ports.

This impressive count is more than four times the number found in the next top-ranked state, New York.

To bolster these numbers further and ensure broader accessibility, the California Energy Commission has unveiled a new initiative. This $30 million incentive project aims to establish additional stations in eastern California, the Central Valley, and the Central Coast. The ultimate aim is to extend the reach of EV charging, particularly to communities that might otherwise have limited access.

CEC Commissioner Patty Monahan aptly stated, “These funds will help fill the gap in areas where we know charging is needed the most to bring the benefits of clean transportation to all Californians.”

Tesla Supercharger Network
Tesla stands as the sole automaker with its proprietary charging network under its direct management. While other car manufacturers like Ford and GM have announced plans for substantial charging networks, these initiatives mostly rely on collaborations with existing networks, which encompass a mix of Level 2 and some DC Fast Charging stations.

Presently, Tesla’s Supercharger network is exclusive to Tesla vehicles in North America, although the company intends to open it up to all EVs in the near future. The most robust Superchargers from Tesla currently deliver up to 250 kW, translating to roughly 200 miles of added range in a mere 15 minutes.

Electrify America
Owned by Volkswagen Group of America, Electrify America’s establishment was mandated as part of the automaker’s settlement with the government following its diesel emissions controversy. In a recent development, it has been unveiled that all 50 states, coupled with Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico, have successfully submitted their plans within the designated timeline and subsequently secured approval.
